RE: single chip modem 1200

What about the bottom line?

Where can I get an ultra cheap 1200 baud modem? Or is it
just a matter of time?

How cheap do you want it ? The Anchor Automation XV Modem is supposed to be
"fully" compatible to the Hayes Smartmodem 1200. It retails for about $250.
As for the quality, I can't tell, but other lower priced modems (such as the
Qubie) do not work as well as the Hayes. You pretty much get what you pay
for.

The Qubie Modem is reported to have a much higher error rate than the
Hayes Smartmodem. Qubie's also drop carrier more and hang up. Though I
do not own a Qubie, I have used them through various BBSes I have accessed.
I have had the most trouble with BBSes running with the Quibie.
Apparanetly this is due to Qubie's use of cheaper parts and less shielding.
Also, their VLSI chips may not be of the best design.
Do not despair, however. It has been said that Quibie is redesiging its
modem so as to eliminate these problems.
