Creative Financing ???? The idea does not sound bad or implausable, the question is can they pull it off before they run out of money. From what has been posted they may be playing with fire though, lack of a realistic approach to financing has killed more than one "golden" goose. "Can I interest someone in a Perpetuum Mobile?"

References: ut-ngp.815 I have, on my very desk, an S1 brochure dated July, 1984. They claim that the following is available: 68000 Z80 Intel** (80,85,186,286,86) 16032 OEM config. $850 $300 $200(8bit) to $ 950 (286) $850 Pre config. 950 375 250 to 1100 950 These guys must have one hell of a development staff. Everything through the 8085 is available, the 8086/88 is 7/84, the 186 in 8/84, the 286 in 10/84, the 16032 in 12/84. Not to mention SL, S1-Pascal (ISO with extensions), S1-F77 (with extensions) , S1-C (full K&R w.e.), S1-BASIC (ANSI w.e.). BUT IF THIS WERE NOT ENOUGH: 8/84: UCSD Pascal translator Microsoft BASIC 5.x(BASIC-80) translator C BASIC translator 10/84: S11 COBOL(74) w.e. S1 Modula-2 w.e. 1/84: HP Basic converter DEC BASIC PLUS/PLUS2 convertor Pascal/MT "" OMSI Pascal/2 Convertor Pascal/VS convertor 2/85: S1-PL/1 S1-Ada S1-Lisp S1-Snobol AND a cross assembler. . . . . . . . Uh, looks more impressive than the original Electronics (Week) ad. What next: S1 to run on a Burroughs B6900? I was always taught that writing a compiler was a several man-month to a couple of man-year project. When I was looking for a C compiler, Tartan (who has a real product and a production compiler-compiler) quoted me 4 more months of development time for the 68K version. As for operating systems, this is supposed to be a several man-year project...for something that "does it all." Either these guys are pulling the scam of the century OR someone has been raising computer engineers from birth for this project. This brochure is packed with information which makes even automobile brochures seem to promise nothing. k When are these guys going to have S1 running on the 6809 in mu Z-TAC cable box? -:) -dya- Seriously. Perhaps UNIX is an old horse. I don't, however, agree with this notion. There still remains a great need for UNIX systems and software and I suspect that this need will remain constant for several years. Living and working in the Washington area (one large military base) I can say, for certain, that UNIX is and will remain a very important element in computer systems and services for the Federal Government. There seems to be this misconception that ADA was supposed to be the end all language and environment for computing for the military. Unless I'm mistaken ADA was meant only to serve specialized programming needs and that other operating systems such as UNIX would become the defacto standards for generalized systems and facilites. I do agree, though, that there are a great many applications where UNIX could be somewhat less than ideal. Perhaps we could see some more details about S1 on the net. David Geller rlgvax!geller

giggling with mischief at heart, I mailed them a "fan-letter" and a request for more info on their products and for the date of their next demo in this area ....
