On the subject of window managers and their using a lot of memory, there is another cure that SGI could consider. SGI could give all 4D customers an extra 4MB of memory with each system without raising the cost to the customer. Instead of shipping systems with 8MB, SGI could send 12MB and then complaints about the window manager being a hog could be then ignored. By the way, wasn't this the case on the IRIS-2400 years ago? The IRIS-2400 was shipped with 2MB originally. One of the operating system releases caused that size system to no longer work AND if you knew who to complain to, you got sent an extra 2MB...
