[net.micro] Wanted: Transputer info

hall@ittral.UUCP (Doug Hall) (08/05/84)

[]

Can anyone point me toward a source of information on INMOS's new CPU called
the Transputer? An article in BYTE this month (August issue, p. 361) described
this chip as well as the programming language for it, Occam. Mentioned was the
Occam Evaluation Kit, a demonstration Occam compiler for the P-system. The
article said it has been on sale for nearly a year, but I can't find it
anywhere. Does anyone have any info on the chip or the compiler?

Thanks,

You'll find an article or two on the transputer in some back issues of the
magazine Electronics (careful, the name changed two weeks ago to Electronics
Week, so the back issues could be filed under either name I guess). I am
sorry that I cannot remember the exact issue, but is was 4-6 months ago,
and I think it was a cover article. I don't have any pointers to the compiler,
but I am sure the article will have some pointer. The transputer is a very
interesting chip, simple and fast.

If you can't find what you need, mail me direct and I'll tell you exactly
what I have (a brochure from InMOS in addition to all the articles in trade
journals) and US mail copies to you if you want.

In relation to the non-sequential msg from UUCP on Occam:

I got some literature on the transputer and Occam which I obtained from
Inmos directly. Your best bet is calling them and asking for anything
on the subject. Also Prentice-Hall on it International Series on
Computer Science has published the Occam Programming Manual. It is a
reference and introduction to the language.

On good thing about it is that Inmos got a version of Occam for the
IBM-PC. The bad news is that it requires UCSD-P system.

Let me ask a question to everyone: has anyone programmed/used/seen the
transputer? What do people think of it? Inmos makes somewhat outrageous
statements about the ability of parallel programming with the transputer.
But I have seen no info from them on one of the key issues in of parallel
processors: how do they deal with inter-processor communication bottle-necks?

This months Byte also has an article on the Transputer.

Could someone mail me the address for Inmos? Thanks in advance...
