We're considering getting a 16-Mbyte 4D/25S to use as a general purpose time sharing box (to replace an old Vax-11/750). We're looking for something which can support about 10-15 simultaneous users doing a random mix of generic non-floating-point stuff (emacs, big bib/tbl/eqn/troff jobs, etc) mostly coming in via telnet connections. We also expect to use it as a server for a variety of network services, such as a domain name server, yp server, nntp, nfs, mail, and as a line printer spooler. I suspect I/O performance will be more of a concern than raw CPU speed. Has anybody put a 4D/25S to this type of use? Are there any hidden problems I should know about? -- Roy Smith, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016 {att,philabs,cmcl2,rutgers,hombre}!phri!roy -or- roy@alanine.phri.nyu.edu "The connector is the network"
