Hello, A friend of mine just acquired an IRIS 3120 workstation. Here are some questions we have (pardon us, we're new to IRIS): 1) System Software We seem to be running version 3.5 of the system. We'd like job control, if possible. Are there any more recent versions of the system around? 2) modem We'd like to set up a dial-in/dial-out modem. I could write a program to edit /etc/inittab and send signals to init -- just wondering if there was an easier way. 3) X-windows: is there a version ported to this beast? Thanks very much, Scott jsm@phoenix.princeton.edu -- Scott McCauley, jsm@phoenix.princeton.edu (INTERNET) Home: (609) 683-9065 Office: (609) 243-3312 (FTS 340-3312) Fax: (609) 243-2160 (FTS 340-2160)

We have a 3130, but I think most things are the same. 1) 3.6 is the most recent version of the OS. I suggest you get it. There are several annoying bugs in 3.5. 2) I have been able to use a serial port for dialing in OR out, but not both. I don't see any way of doing both on the same serial port. When you have the port set for both the software tries to talk to itself and gets all messed up. Our manuals tell you how to set up a serial port for a modem. I suggest you use ttyf* , because this has hardware handshaking. 3) I don't know about the availability of X-windows. -- Brent L.
