Why does the NeWS server need to be set uid to root? We have changed it on one of our machines an have not run into any problems yet. On another note, we are trying to come up with a way to change the standard console login screen, to a more interesting display. We want to have a graphics (gl) program running in the background. This will mean a NeWS server will have to be run after someone logs out. Is there a way to do this cleanly and elegantly? (i.e no massive system hacks) Email-reply is fine, If there enough response I'll post a summary. The news_server is suid root so it can mpin one of its pages to prevent being swapped out and so it can set itself a non-degrading priority. If you run it non-suid root it still works, as you've observed, but you suffer a small performance loss. To run a gl program behind the console window will require "massive system hacks". Also when you see release 3.2 with pandora (visual login) you won't want your gl background anymore. -- From the TARDIS of Mark Callow msc@ramoth.sgi.com, ...{ames,decwrl}!sgi!msc "There is much virtue in a window.
