There are several such sprintf and similar redefinitions in the file (nuke the attempts, anything that relies on the return status is suffering from brain-rot and ought to be exposed). Other things need to be changed (the definition of schar, as I recall). If you want to compile from the source, a version of TeX 2.991 (the latest stable one, 2.992 is considered to be beta) that works on SGIs can be found on neat.cs.toronto.edu pub/tex.tar.* (it also works on Suns, DS3100s, uVaxen, and so on). Does your underfull hbox problem occur on every file you try? I would start by checking that the creation of the .fmt file proceeded with absolutely no error (in particular when loading the hyphenation stuff).
