rex@nbc1.UUCP (Rex Espiritu) (11/11/89)

Our SGI IRIS 4D/120S keeps getting these intermittent messages on its console:

dks0d1s0 Unrecoverable device error: Write fault.
	dks0d1s0 retrying xfer

If anyone knows what might be causing this, please contact me.

This error message indicates that the disk drive's embedded SCSI
controller returned an error; the OS is merely reporting it. The
error was unrecoverable (by the drive), so the OS is retrying. If you
don't get another message, the OS retry was successful. This could
indicate an intermittent drive error, or a soft media error, although
that would usually be reported as a media error.

If you'll send me mail telling me which type of disk drive you have, I
might be able to give you more specific info for your particular
drive.

For those who really want to know, a scsi cmd returned a check
condition error, a request sense command then returned the info
that the primary error was 4, with an additional sense code of 3.
