[comp.sys.sgi] Maximum number of windows

msc@ramoth.esd.sgi.com (Mark Callow) (11/29/89)

Several people have questioned my statements about the maximum number
of windows. I was indeed wrong. Here's the scoop.

On 4D/[567]0[G] machines (internally known as Clover 1) you can have a maximum
of 64 GL windows. This is the number of graphics contexts supported
by the graphics controller hardware.

On 4D/X0GT and 4D/XX0GTX[B] (Professional Series and Power Series)
machines you can have a maximum of 256 windows. The limit comes from
the size of the memory segment shared between the GL and the window server.
This limit was not increased in IRIX release 3.2.

On the 4D/2[05] (Personal Iris) the limit is (apparently) 50 windows,
limited by the same shared memory segment. Since many PI's are shipped
with only 8 MB of memory we decided to reduce the size of the segment.
This is the limit I thought had been raised in 3.2 but apparently
it hasn't been.

In all cases you can have an unlimited number of NeWS windows and,
if you are running an X window manager, an unlimited number of
X windows. If you aren't running an X window manager, each X window
is a GL window so the above limits apply.

"There is much virtue in a window. It is to a human being as a frame is to
a painting, as a proscenium to a play. It strongly defines its content."
