[comp.sys.sgi] /dev/mmem 666 out of the box. Why?

/dev/mmem is the mapped device interface to /dev/mem - however the
allowed set of mappings
is determined by a table located in /usr/sysgen/master/mem - currently
that contains
only the sound chip and ecc memopry logging ram - neither of these  is a
security issue -
though it is true that one user could interfere with another... The
sound chip is
mainly used to playing around with
