[comp.sys.sgi] Optical disks on the SGI

marie@ernie.Berkeley.EDU (Marie desJardins) (03/06/90)

Has anyone out there put an optical disk drive onto an Iris, either
the PI or the GTX? Information on experiences with either WORMs
or Rewritables would be much appreciated, including hardware issues
like cable adapters and software such as drivers and FS mods.
Also, vendors and ballpark cost figures would be great.

Please post responses to "marie@ernie.berkeley.edu"

I have seen a couple of messages from people who have, they seemed
to be pleased with what they were using. One person was evaluating
a MO (magneto-optical) drive. He was quite impessed with it, he said
it was unfortunate that they would not be able to buy it (funding
problems). I don't remember off hand who that person was or which
company the drive was from, I'll have to see were I put that info.
So far I have only seen two companies advertise that they support
machines on SGI equipment. They are:

   Genesis Imaging Technologies, Inc.
   1220 Valley Forge Rd.
   Valley Forge, PA 19482-0962
   Phone: (215) 933-4848
   Sales Rep.: Barbara A. Wandersee
      Drive ~ $6,000 , Disk: ~$230

   Introl Corporation
   A Control Systems Company
   Intelligent Peripheral Control
   2675 Patton Road
   St. Paul, Minnesota 55113
   Phone: (612) 631-7600
Director, Marketing, and Sales: Bruce J. Brunette
      Drive & SCSI port: ~$14,000, Disk ~$230

Both companies use the Sony SMO-D501 MO drives. We are concidering
buying a MO drive and are also interested in what people have to say
about their experience with both of these companies.
