[comp.sys.sgi] Optical Drives for Iris'

eferry@lvax.brl.mil ("Earl N. Ferry") (03/07/90)

We are currently looking into a company called Q-Systems for an optical
drive for our iris 4D/20's.

        Drive $7500, Disk $250

I cannot remember if these prices are GSA or not, but the Drive is the
SONY SMO-S501 Erasable Optical Drive, and the disks are 650Meg (325Meg/side).

Are you sure about them being 650Mb? I think they are less than 600Mb
when used with an SGI machine.

Yup, that is correct. The 512 byte/sector media yields only 298 MB/side,
or 596 total.

The 1024 byte/sector media (which is not filesystem compatible----yet)
yields 652 total.

If you use the (not yet readily available, I'm to understand) ZCAV media,
this will be up lots--like 466/side at 512 byte sectors. I'm not sure if
Sony supports this media, but the unit that SGI is considering OEMing
certainly will.

Our sales people can assist you in contacting one of our Geometry Partners
for obtaining WORM, ROM and I think some MO (erasable) 3rd party solutions
if you can't wait for the product from SGI (RSN (real soon now)).

Don't be too hasty. We expect our device to be quite a bit faster than
the products currently available. It is so far.....

You said 1024 bytes/sector is not filesystem compatible----yet!
How long until it is? How long until the ZCAV media is available?
If Sony doesn't support this media, who else is making the MO drives.
As far as I have seen Sony is the only one making them. Buying a
drive from SGI at twice the cost everyone else sells it for doesn't
sound appeling either.
We are looking at buying a MO drive shortly after our 4D/210VGX
arrives, which hopefully will only be a few months from now.

Variable sector lengths is probably about a year away. Perhaps a bit more.
ZCAV is available to me in limited quantity today, but don't know about
more commercial availability time frames.
MO mfrs. include Sony, Ricoh, Maxoptics, Hitachi, Kodak, and probably
others that I am not familiar with. Not too sure about Kodak any more
but they and Verbatim (as I recall) had something going a while ago.
I can't change the price for you. That's not in my realm.
