Note: this is not a flame but rather an appeal for help I'm trying to get some info from SGI about X, Motif, and GSA contracts. Our sales rep is unreliable because he seems too busy to return my calls. This is NOT necessarily a criticism of him; he's probably a busy guy working a lot of contracts and after all, we're only ordering one PI. Maybe I'm just too impatient to wait the 1-2 weeks it takes him to call. Some of my questions concern the inner workings of X, so maybe he's not even the guy to ask. Anyway, is there anyone at SGI who has time to answer some questions? thanks, pete loan loan@neon.stanford.edu VA Medical Center 415.493.5000 x4474

My sales rep suggested that SGI could "play hard ball" with us because we bought third party memory (at a fraction of the cost of what SGI charged). Frankly, I'm getting a little tired for the arrogance of some SGI sales types. I hope that Stardent gets its act together soon, so that there will be some competition in the high end workstation market. [ others' SGI sales force bashing deleted ] Since it seems vogue to be bashing SGI sales people these days, I'd like to break the trend by stating that the Pittsburgh office which services us here in Cleveland has been doing an outstanding job. We deal with many vendors here and I firmly believe that the SGI sales (and technical) folks are the best. As most sale people can certainly confirm, dealing with government procurements can be more trouble than they are worth, yet our salesman works with us through even the most difficult buys. It took 13 months to acquire a machine, and then another couple of months before SGI got paid. He had to submit tons of paperwork and make a bunch of phone calls. As a customer this is very embarassing, yet the saleman never gave me a hard time about it. He is always willing to drop off the latest equipment for a week or so and let us do bench- marks, etc. The technical help is equally competent -- often more so than the Hot Line. Although they are in Pittburgh (about 2 and half hours from Cleve- land), our machines are never down more than a day once the problem is diagnosed. The field administrator (sales assistant) will take down a list of requirements from me in the morning, work up quotes for various configurations, and FAX me them by lunchtime. Am I satified with the support? That's for damn sure. So, if you guys in the valley are having too much trouble, why not move out to the great North East ;-) -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tony Facca | phone: 216-433-8318 NASA Lewis Research Center | Cleveland, Ohio 44135 | email: fsfacca@lerc08.lerc.nasa.gov -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
