[comp.sys.sgi] psview

cycy@isl1.ri.cmu.edu (Christopher Young) (05/31/89)

In our documentation for psview(1), it is claimed that there is only one
arguement to this function, and that this argument is either a postscript
file or '-' to indicate that input is coming from standard input. However,
when I type in:

psview -

I get the following:
psview: Illegal swithch `-'
usage: psview [-F[scale]] [-xmin,ymin-xmax,ymax] [-B]
		 [-b bgcolor] [-f fgcolor] [-c] [-v] [file]

Can somebody get me the real documentation?

	Thanks,

... I totally agree.
psview(1) is *not* a 4Dgifts. So if it is not supported by SGI, why
doesn't SGI move it to 4Dgifts, in order to join non-supported programs
... :-)

BTW: It's amazing that one of the benefits of NeWS is that POSTSCRIPT
can be used but isn't supported. psh(1) is useless to view multi-page
documents.

psh provides a very simply way to connect to the server and run PostScript
programs. Usually these are NeWS programs that make windows for themselves.
As I said in my earlier message, if you send ordinary PostScript programs,
they draw on the background.

psview is also a front end for NeWS. The difference is that it runs your
PostScript in a window and it handles showpage. NeWS is still being used to
execute the PostScript and draw the output.

Greetings,

Here's a quick question for anyone who can help. We're running
FIGARO+ (TGS's version of PHIGS) on a 4D/25. One of the options with this
package is to get a peripheral support option which will allow you to
make hardcopies of the graphics screen. Essentially, this option takes
what's on the screen and dumps it to a file based on the type of output
desired. For example, it is capable of writing files for an HP LaserJet,
Tektronix, and last, but not least, PostScript. It is here that the
problem occurs. Double clicking on the PostScript file, the image is
recreated on the terminal screen in black and white. Looks beautiful
and makes me very happy. However, when any buttons on the mouse are
pressed, the image disappears and the terminal freezes almost completely.
While it is still possible to move the mouse, nothing it moves onto
registers. It is impossible to click on any files, move windows, type
text in a window, absolutely nothing. People logged in remotely are not
effected. The only way to correct this seems to be by bringing the system
down.
Has anyone out the experienced a problem of this nature. The bug
seems to be in the 'psview' command. Is there a problem with our machine
or perhaps the OS (3.2.1) [that has been fixed in later releases (I hope!)]?
The PostScript files, when sent to the LaserWriter, are rendered correctly.
Any comments and/or suggestions would be most helpful.

	Thanks in advance,

			Lee
