just a picky point, 56 planes total, not 56 bit planes and a z-buffer. 
it breaks down as follows

24 bits framebuffer
24 bits z-buffer
4  bits wid planes (not user accessible)
2  bits popup planes
2  bits overlay planes

56 bits total

(57 if you count the cursor bit too. )
