[comp.sys.sgi] system tools inoperable after net s/w install

csfst1@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Charles S. Fuller) (11/06/90)

I appear to have FUBAR'ed my CDC Cyber 910 (Iris) running IRIX 3.3, and
would appreciate any suggestions re the following:

After installing and configuring YP (as a client in an existing domain)
and NFS, some of the System tools have been rendered inoperable. Of
particular concern is the "System Manager" tool, which opens a window,
does nothing, then closes the window with no trace of what transpired.
The "Transfer Manager" doesn't bother to open a window. Selecting
"WorkSpace" results in the message "Can't connect with File Access
Monitor (fam)" to be displayed to the console. Etc., etc., ad nauseum.

As for YP and NFS themselves ... they're working just fine, with
possibly one exception: I can't seem to add a network printer -- which,
of course, may be corrected by fixing the problem being addressed here.

My first thoughts centered around mis-matched uid's/gid's, but all seems
to be OK in that regard ... unless something in the bowels of the
sgi-specific tools has an improper set of rights/ownership. Therein
may lie the problem ... but where should I begin to search? I've
RTFM'd, with negative result. I suspect I'm looking for something akin
to Apollo's `/node_data directory (for those of you who speak Aegis) in
which lock files and the like are stored for these tools.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
