[comp.sys.sgi] rdump from ibm 6000 to iris

root@KL4IRIS.KI.KU.DK (Super-User) (11/13/90)

I would like to use rdump on a IBM 6000 to do backup on the QIC tape
drive in an Iris. Have anyone tried this ?
I get a permission denied from /etc/rmt when I try. Any help would be
appreciated

We are also trying to hit the tape drive over the net (RS6000<->IRIS) and
have hit upon the same "permission Denied' problem you described.
In our experimentations in seems that the rdump command logins under
root on the IRIS to hit the tape. Now there must be something
'non-standard' about this logging procedure and the machines just
can't negotiate this login. However if you remove the root password
from the IRIS machine (make it null), the rdump works.

I know, I know, this is not a viable option: having an open root account.
Man, i shake just at the thought of having any open account.

RDUMP does seem to work just fine when a 6000 is hitting another 6000, at
least to the floppy. (We don't have a tape drive to test yet).

IBM is working on the problem at this posting and i will inform of the
'answer' to this problem.
