This week's Digital Review contains an article comparing the new Sun Sparcstations to SGI machines. There is mention of a diskless 4D/310GTX machine that can display 100,000 polygons/second and which retails for $49,900. Is this information accurate? Such a beast is not listed in my periodic table of the IRISes. For $15,000 more than a 4D/35, this seems like an awesome deal. Any information on this 310 machine would be greatly appreciated. I was just talking to my SGI sales rep a few days ago; they dropped the whole 4D/2XX series - no longer sell them. Now they go from the 4D/85 and the next machine up is the 4D/310. These are the NEW prices, w/o system disk: 4D/310S: $24,900 (no graphics) (was $34,900) 4D/310GTXB: $49,900 (100K polygons/s) (was $74,900) 4D/310VGX: $79,900 (1 M polygons/s) (was $94,900) Highest end machine: 4D/380VGX: $204,900 (1 M polygons/s, 8x33MHZ cpus) (was $$264,400) As you can see, MAJOR price drops. Isn't competition great? (look out IBM). I am already starting to look for a way to buy a 4D/310VGX; $80K for 1 M polygons/s looks ~real~ good. Note: I don't work for SGI; I'm just a satisfied (4D/25TG) customer, but let me qualify that by saying I am still a NEW customer. Hope this info helps.
