[comp.sys.sgi] Root access to NFS mounted file systems

system@alchemy.chem.utoronto.ca (System Admin (Mike Peterson)) (12/04/90)

I am trying to get "root" access to an SGI system's files that are
mounted on an Apollo for backup purposes - I can not backup files which
don't have at least 'r' permissions for "world" so it is clear that I am
not getting root access. Here is the /etc/exports file from the SGI:

/usr -root=alchemy.chem.utoronto.ca,access=alchemy.chem.utoronto.ca

I can mount the file system OK, and can backup files that have
'r' permissions for "world". I have tried a few other variants on the
above, e.g. without the 'access=...', with no difference. After each
attempt, I have done 'exportfs -a' on the SGI, then unmounted and
remounted the SGI file system on the Apollo.

To make NFS work this far, I have had to add '-n' to the 'mountd'
commands in /usr/etc/inetd.conf on the SGI.

Any hints?
