[comp.sys.sgi] using a modem on an IRIS, need some help

ctt31684@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (... C H I N G ...) (12/07/90)

Hi, I need to connect a lone IRIS 4D 25TG computer to my school's network.
Since I only have access to a phone line (no network), I'm thinking about
using a modem to connect the thing to a terminal server. But my problem is
when I called the SGI help line then person told me there's no modem software
for the IRIS from SGI. I'm wondering if somebody had already written a modem
program or know where I can find one. Thanks. Please reply by email.

I assume you mean you want to use a serial line for network access. Sounds
like you need SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol)... Don't know if there are
any PD versions around, but you could check the various anonymous FTP's for
it....

If you just need login access (through the net modem), you can probably get
away with cu.

Silicon Graphics sells a SLIP implementation. Because of operating system
idiosyncrasies such as sockets with STREAMS tty's, you are unlikely
to find a public domain version this year.

I apologize for the advertisement.
