I was merrily backing up my Personal IRIS (under IRIX 3.3.1) the other day using the visual administrator backup utility -- when it failed. After nine tapes of happiness, in the window where it had been listing the names of the files that it was writing to tape, the backup program wrote "S 10" and hung. The SYSLOG had entries for the first nine tapes with up to 20 recoverable errors per tape, but that didn't seem too ridiculous. I don't understand what happened. There doesn't seem to be any notation on that message in either the man page or the manual. Anyone know what's going on? Incidentally, a while back someone posted a request for info on how to go about cleaning tape drives. I didn't see an answer, and I'm curious, too. Thanks in advance, Eugene Gholz (eugholz@athena.mit.edu)
