[net.micro] Wanted: Opinions, warnings, and praises about DEC PRO-350 & P/OS

spf@bonnie.UUCP (Steve Frysinger) (09/22/84)

If anyone in netland has experience with the DEC PRO-350, running the
P/OS operating system, I would appreciate your impressions, etc.
Especially, e.g., How does it compare to RSX-11M+ on a "real" PDP-11?
Can user-written drivers be installed? Is multitasking still there,
or did they cluge a scheduler to support foreground/background only?
Does the Pascal compiler let you get at the CORE graphics Package?
Is the Real-Time Interface sensible, and supported by the OS?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

The following comes from a friend here at DEC who is in the PRO group. It is
not an official policy statement or opinion:

"P/OS is multitasking, not multiuser, but all the RSX-11M+ scheduler stuff is
there. Installing user written drivers is done the same as for a privileged
task. Incorporating drivers is written up really well in the Guide to Writing
P/OS Drivers book (order # AA-BT73A-TH). CGL can be acessed by any higher
level language that supports the R5 calling sequence, so Pascal should be
fine. The Real-Time interface is the most popular option on the PRO, which
indicates that is sensible. It is completely supported by P/OS with the PRTIL
(PRO Real Time Interface Library) software. It is not supported by UNIX or RT
yet, unless you write your own driver, but it will be soon."

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers,
