[comp.sys.sgi] NeWS wanted for 3030

Thomas.Weihrich@arbi.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de (Thomas Weihrich) (01/25/91)

Hi everybody !

A friend of mine said that he reformatted a harddisk with the NeWS-sources
for the Iris 3000 line by accident. Of course he did not have a backup.
But that means that NeWS must be around somewhere.
Would some kind soul please give me hints as to where to get it ?
I need a decent window system for my IRIS ... (sniff).
Any hint is appreciated ...

He and I got our machines directly from the SGI-development lab.
So, please. folks at SGI, help me and let me know where to get NeWS ...

Thanks for any help !

Thomas

NeWS was never "officially" supported on the 3000's SGI has it, but
wouldn't let it out. I was told that it ate up so much memory on the 3000's
that it wasn't worth having any ways.

Rumors are fascinating. Now for a few facts:

1.	I ported NeWS to the 3000 before I ported it to the 4D line.

2.	The 3000 port was never completed to product quality; in particular
	no documentation was ever done.

3.	SGI never released this port because it determined that it needed to
put its resources into other things that had higher priority than
	finishing the port.

4.	The lack of documentation and consequent support issues forced SGI
to decide to not release this version of NeWS to anyone.

5.	To my knowledge the source for this port was never released to anyone.

6.	NeWS ran extremely well on an 8 megabyte 3030.

7.	The port is now old and musty.

There is no possibility we could release this now so please don't ask.
