[comp.sys.sgi] GNUemacs

mccalpin@MASIG1.OCEAN.FSU.EDU ("John D. McCalpin") (03/09/88)

Does anyone have the `m-' and `s-' header files for gnu-emacs
for an IRIS 3000 series machine ???

Does anyone know where I can get GNUemacs with EDT emulation
to run on a 4D system? I could do the port, but someone else
probably already has.

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone out there have initialization code for Gnu Emacs which
binds the arrow keys to control-p, control-n, control-f and control-b
on the IRIS 4D 120 console? (It is probably extremely simple.)
How about binding control-h to delete? (so that the large backspace
key can delete in emacs, as in the shell)

thanks,
George Elkins

I would like to bring up Gnu Emacs on our 4D/50 running
Release 4D1-3.14711181642 WITHOUT becoming an gnu emacs guru.

Is there anyone out there who
(a) has it running on a compatible system, and
(b) either
	(i) is willing to send me (or let me ftp) the sources
(with whatever mods are necessary), or
(ii) can point me to sources which I can get to run
	     without becoming the afore-mentioned gnu-guru.

Thanks.

GNU emacs compiles just fine if you follow the instructions.
The only hitch is that the "make install" procedure does not work
since the "install" program on the iris is not the right one, and
the iris also lacks "cpset". So just set up the Makefile (for paths)
and config.h files (to include m-iris4D.h and s-iris3-6.h), and
modify the 3rd or 4th line of etc/Makefile, and you can go.

If anyone needs it, I include here a "tarmail" file of the main
Makefile, the etc/Makefile and src/config.h. Note that src/Makefile
does not want to be touched. This compiled on a personal iris and
and iris 4D/220.

I'm still failing to compile GNU emacs on my 4D/20 running IRIX 3.3.1...

Several people suggested that to solve the swap space problem, I add the line

#define HAVE_GETWD

to the src/s-iris3-6.h file. So I did. However, at the fateful temacs command
during the make, I now get the error "Termination code 138" with no explaination
whatsoever. This code appears essentially immediately after the temacs command
is executed -- no more waiting for swap space to fill.
Please send mail with any suggestions... Many people (including me) anxiously
await the use of EMACS...

Thanks,

I had the same problem. I put the following line in my config.h file:

#define HAVE_GETPW

and it compiled and is currently running without and problems.

I'm sorry but it seems that I have given the wrong define statement to
get EMACS to compile correctly.

The correct define is:

#define HAVE_GETWD

This is now what I should have typed the first time!

Since so many people (including me) have had so much trouble compiling
EMACS, I have a modest proposal: could some kind soul make the SGI EMACS
executables available via anonymous ftp? If they were willing, could
sgi.com serve as the distribution point without running afoul of
Stallman's copyright, etc?

This would save a **LOT** of person-hours throughout the SGI user community
and also decrease the traffic on this group.

Please help. When I try to make GNU emacs on any of our SGI 4D machines I get
correct compilation and ld works but running temacs does as shown below.
make
	cd etc; make all
	cd src; make all
	make -f xmakefile all
	./temacs -batch -l inc-vers
Loading inc-vers...
*** Termination code 139

Stop.
*** Error code 1

Stop.
*** Error code 1

Stop.

I've seen the commentary about termination code 138 which is solved by doing
#define HAVE_GETWD in config.h. I've had emacs working, thanks to the GETWD
suggestion, under 3.3.1 but needed to remake after reloading from the
distribution tape. I seem to have lost the recipe! Is there a list of these
codes and thier meanings?

Thanks

Hi, a while back there was a version of GNU emacs that ran on the IRIS...
Does anyone know where I can find it? Alternatively, are there any good
implementations of common lisp out there?

GNU Emacs 18.57 works on 4D machines running Irix 3.3.
It's available by FTP from prep.ai.mit.edu:/pub/gnu
