[comp.sys.sgi] mailbox, yp,

mjz@texhrc.UUCP (Michael Zeitlin) (02/15/91)

We have a problem with the mailbox tool working with a
yellow pages domain whose server is a SUN running
      4.1.1 of SUNOS.

When yp is turned off, the mailbox tool works great (of coarse
      no mail cancome in...)

When yp is turned on...we get mailbox: bad file number
repeating a s a message and the icon is unresponsive...

mail itself works ..( i can read an write mail without using
       the mailbox tool).

any ideas on the source of the problems?

thanks for all the help on this problem.... as it
turns out our ypmaster on the sun server did not
(as one should expect) contain some of the sgi
	  services and rpc entries.

SGI should provide a page in their documentation
that lists which services are not part of the
	  standard BSD system.

Sometimes , as in our case, the ypmaster is a non-sgi
system and it would be helpful to have this
	  documented somewhere......

If we are lucky, a future release will check the local /etc/rpc file
if the YP map gives no joy. This will make the problem go away.
