[comp.sys.sgi] dump cannot read disk

robert@swanee.ee.uwa.oz.au (Roberto Togneri) (03/12/91)

Hi,
I just grabbed the dump binaries and tried to get it to work on
our 4d/20 irises (OS 3.1d) and this is what I got:

# dump 0f /dev/tape /
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue Mar 12 12:25:44 1991
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/rroot (/) to /dev/tape
read: Invalid argument
DUMP: (This should not happen) bread from /dev/rroot [block 1]: count=512, got=-512
DUMP: bad magic number (0x0) in superblock
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.

Could this be something to do with our OS (which is now out of date!)?
Would recompiling the sources on our system fix this? If so can I get
them from somewhere?

Hope somebody can shed some light on this.

Thanks,

Please note that the DUMP/RESTORE binaries were compiled on IRIX 3.3.1,
and probably won't work on versions of the system that are not IRIX
3.3.*
