This message is here to announce BRIEF (tm), a new program editor for
the IBM-PC and compatibles (plus the Tandy 2000). BRIEF's features
include:

      * A compiled, readable, EMACS-like macro language with complete
         flow of control, allowing full customization of BRIEF and
         the addition of new commands.

      *  Completely reconfigurable keyboard.

      * Full "undo" of all text and cursor commands. Up to the last
         100 commands per buffer can be undone at any time.

      * Multiple files/buffers, limited only by the amount of memory
         in your machine.

      * Multiple (tiled) windows, with control over size and placement.

      * Online help (the entire help facility is written in the macro
         language).

      * Complete regular expression search and replace.

      * Keystroke macros (in addition to the compiled macro language).

      * Invoke programs from inside BRIEF.

      * "Virtual" file memory, so file size is limited only by disk space.

      * True automatic indentation for C (another macro package).

      *  Mnemonic key assignments.

      * Full source for all macros.

BRIEF is a programmer's editor; although basic "word processing" functions
are provided (word wrap, paragraph reform, etc.), it is not intended
to be used as a full-function word processor, unless used in conjunction
with a formatter (e.g. nroff).

An introductory macro contest offers a $1,000 prize for the best BRIEF
macro submitted by 11/31, along with other prizes for macros judged
"useful".

BRIEF runs on IBM PCs, PC compatibles, and Tandy 2000s with 192K or more.
It costs $195, and is available from Solution Systems(tm),
335 Washington St., Norwell, MA 02061, (617)659-1571, or from
The Programmer's Shop ((800)421-8006).

with Dave Nanian, brunix!dbn), and the above description should not
be taken as an impartial review. We'd both be happy to answer any
questions.
