I am the proud owner of a SUN WORKSTATION model 150U. I want to sell or exchange part or all of my workstation so that I can get a newer model. The model 150U is a rack mounted workstation with 15 slot backplane (parallel arbitration) and 1000 watt power supply. My workstation has the SUN2 upgrade and is therefore nearly identical to the more modern model 170. As I understand it, the only significant differences are the graphics/keyboard (the 150U has the "vt100 compatible" keyboard in the metal box and the graphics display in the metal box with the lower refresh rate and more persistent phosphor) and the main memory limitation of 2 mb (the model 170 can take up to 4 megabytes). Processor, memory, and multibus (i.e. I/O system) speeds are the same. The software (SUN 4.2 UNIX) is the same. This could be a great buy for a company that wants a rack mounted file server (older style graphics not important) or needs a system in a hurry (I hear delivery times for new systems from SMI are running 4 to 5 months).
