I use my PC as a terminal to access the IRIS workstation through a null modem cable to connect both serial ports. The software I use on PC is procomm plus. When I try to logon to IRIS within procomm, I get strange characters in first 2-3 minutes(if I keep hitting Enter). then suddenly the "IRIS Login" prompt comes out. After that the PC terminal works fine within the day(even I get off then get on procomm again). I'm wondering if there is a sleep function built in the serial communication on IRIS? if this is true, why should it be there? -- ***************************************************************************** Naiming Shen naiming@bagend.eng.umd.edu *****************************************************************************

This sounds like the PC is talking to the IRIS at a speed slower than 9600. Try changing the gettydefs tag on the appropriate line in /etc/inittab. See the inittab(4), gettydefs(4), getty(1m), and uugetty(1m) man pages. Vernon Schryver, vjs@sgi.com

I have Macs and DOS machines that can do 38400, and that would help alot with some serial transfers that happen (when one isn't rich enough for a local ethernet, or boards for all of our boxes). Thanks .
