[comp.sys.sgi] FTP problem

I discovered today that the problem is in the way that ftp processes
passwords.  If the password doesn't contain any tricky characters then
the user can do an ftp login OK, but if the password contains white
space the password is rejected as soon as the character is entered.
Can anyone confirm this problem and offer an alternative other than
restricting users to alphanumeric passwords?
