I've recently received, finally, an add-on 780 meg SCSI Hitachi disk drive for a Personal Iris 4D/25G, running IRIX 3.3.1. This will be in addition to the 190 meg system disk. I haven't yet installed the disk, but I'm assuming (perhaps naively) that that will go smoothly. I'm interested in some advice on how to best organize my file systems with the new disk in place. I can think of three or four options. 1. Make the entire new disk part of the /usr file system, using the logical volume feature. (I've read the manual, and there've been a couple of good posts recently on how to do that.) 2. Creating one or more new file systems for the entire new disk. 3. Using part of the new disk to extend /usr, and creating new file systems for the rest. 4. Doing any of the above, but using some of the new disk as swap space. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these options? I should add that this is used as a general-purpose workstation, with an emphasis on pre- and post-processing work in computational fluid dynamics. Right now I'm the only user. If you've gone through this and have any advice for me, please email. I'll post a summary if there's general interest. -- Charlie Towne Email: pstowne@zargon.lerc.nasa.gov MS 5-11 Phone: (216) 433-5851 NASA Lewis Research Center Cleveland, OH 44135
