***novice warning**** I am setting up a PI for use by physics undergrads with (at best) a smattering of VMS computing experience (& I'm not that much more experienced myself). I've ftp'd emacs, which now works with the vt220 terminals the students will often use to get to the PI. I think the students will particularly like the emacs edt emulator. Now-- what to use for the student lucky enough to be on the workstation itself? Jot seems to have too little functionality. I don't have the X-stuff (X-developers option) I need to build X emacs & think I'd rather wait for irix 4.0 before I start that project. [But I have ftp'd X11R4 so instructions on what to do would be appreciated.] SGI software express suggested AME. So, my questions are: Is AME a good editor for programming or should I learn how to make X emacs. Is X emacs easily programmable to make X emacs edt emulators & thus save the students from learning another editor? I would like to read reassuring words that one or both works well with other SGI utilities, e.g., edge, & has a fast learning curve. [I think my students would trade functionality for ease of learning, in fact, they use jot now.] Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Kirkman DECnet: 55860::TKIRKMAN Dept. of Physics HEP-> MNHEP::55860:: SPAN-> WAVES::55860:: St. John's University INTERnet: tkirkman%55860@vx.acs.umn.edu Collegeville, MN 56321 tkirkman%55860@msus1.msus.edu (612) 363-3811 BITnet: tkirkman@csbsju (612) 363-3151 FAX:(612) 363-2504 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
