he doesn't seem to have much of an overview of the field.  Is he aware
of what is going on in places like PARC, with what UNIX is, what ACM does?

I understand that the 'average' microcomputer user does not have access to
many of these things, but in many cases the user _does_ have access (the
algorithms and concepts are often published).  In any event,
a 'gee whiz, my computer can correct spelling' is more informative when
viewed in context of the entire field and history of computing, not just
on his specific micro.
