When we got our first SGI machines several years ago, some of the users complained that the screens weren't very sharp. I noticed it, but tried to ignore it. (I also started working in a half dark office to maximize contrast). The last few PI's we have gotten have new monitors that are wonderful. The contrast and brightness seem an order of magnitude better. I can actually work in a lighted office now. I realize that this is a totally unreasonable request, but I'll throw it out anyway.... Wouldn't it be great if SGI would let us upgrade our old monitors? Maybe just letting us purchase the new type monitor at SGI cost? What do you say SGI'ers, has anybody else been complaining about the monitors? Jim Patterson Photon Research Associates photon!jhp@ucsd.edu uunet!photon!jhp

We have been told that the new monitors are "StereoView-ready", while the old ones are not. The difference in quality is rather obvious. One not inexpensive way to obtain the new monitors is to purchase StereoView for the affected machines. I know of no other upgrade plans -- if anyone has conned their local office into offering such a thing, please let us know. -- Kian-Tat Lim (ktl@wag.caltech.edu, KTL @ CITCHEM.BITNET, GEnie: K.LIM1) System Manager, Materials & Molecular Simulation Center, Caltech

Hi, we bought a 210GTX with the old monitor last summer and I found the old monitor so annoying that I talked the sales rep into exchanging it for the Sony (about 5 Months after purchase), paying the list price difference of the monitors. However, he made a face as if I was offering him a toad ... Anyway, I think that the 60 Hz display frequency is still to low. I have been working some thousands of hours now with it and think it is noticeably worse than e.g. the Sparc's color monitors. Cheers ! Rick@vee.lrz-muenchen.de Henrik Klagges, U of Munich
