[comp.sys.sgi] Maximum disk size

scfisher@oasys.dt.navy.mil (Fisher) (06/19/91)

Does anyone know what the maximum disk size that Irix will support? We
are considering getting some 1.6GB (unformatted) drives for our systems.

That should work just fine. We use 10 byte commands, so we don't run
into the problems that Sun and DEC had with > 1Gb formatted capacity.

Of course, that is in the abstract; I can't say whether the particular
drive you are looking at will work, but the ones we have tried have
worked fine.

There really is no explicit limit on disk size as such. (Well, OK, 2^31
512-byte blocks... ;-) )

The maximum filesystem size is currently 8 gig.

Are these drives anything we support? If not, the usual caveats about
being on your own with third-party hardware apply, of course...

Currently, it is 2.147GB, or 2 ^ 31 - 1 bytes, formatted. That means about
2.4 to 3.1 GB formatted.
