In a previous posting Jim Patterson (photon!jhp@ucsd.edu) talked about fuzzy PI monitors. I couldn't agree more! The 4D/20's I use regularily have pretty terrible focus even in the iddle of the screen (not to mention the contrast problem.....) When SGi lent us a 340VGX the monitor was pretty good, although still a bit soft (the SGI hame was imprinted on it in very pale grey.) Although I'm hardly in a position to boy, I would fully support tha "monitor upgrade" idea. ---->David devans@snowhite.cis.uoguelph.ca

If you're looking for a sharper monitor, I can recommend the NEC Multisync 5D monitor. I got eyestrain from the monitor which came with our PI. The replacement cost less than half as much as SGI Australia charge for their PI monitors, and we had no trouble selling our SGI monitor to another site. The effect: an upgrade for only a couple of hundred dollars, and I can now get two 80-column windows side-by-side and still be able to read the text! -jeremy DISCLAIMER: I have no association with SGI or NEC, other than as a customer. SGI sent me two more monitors before I finally got one which was within "specs." On this monitor the lower left corner of the screen is still somewhat fuzzy. I have seen many SGI monitors in use at the NASA Lewis Research Center, and the quality varies greatly. There is a 340 which has a super sharp beautiful image, and some others which were worse than the ones which I refused to accept delivery on. I think what we have here is a quality control problem. SGI, to their credit, has tried to keep me satisfied, and some quality control person told me that he was going to investigate what happened in my case. But this was over a year ago, and from the postings that I've seen, the situation has not improved. Perhaps, if enough people who are dissatisfied with their monitors complain, then SGI will change their arrangement with their supplier, which is, I was told, that the monitors are shipped to the customer without any testing. Or maybe even change suppliers. -- Steven H. Izen, Associate Professor, Dept. of Math. and Stat. We also have had problems with the monitors on our Personal Irises. When we asked our SGI service person about the poor screen quality compared to our 4D-210 (which had no problems), we were told that we could not expect the same picture quality on a PI as on a VGX machine. A few weeks later, we noticed the monitor on a demo machine from SGI had a much better picture than ours; we asked for and received a new monitor, and haven't had any problems since. -Stan Johnson NASA / Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas 77058 johnson@euler.jsc.nasa.gov
