Our number 1 ethernet debugger is either SUN "etherfind" or a IBM-PC running netwatch. Our next level of debugging for more careful examination is the HP LAN ANALYZER, which reports bad frames and is guaranteed to get all teh packets. For cable problems, we have a Cabletron TDR box, but we haven't found much use for it yet. Most of your other questions are answered in DEC's network guide. DELNI's look to the base band cable like individual stations (hosts) so you can have as many of them on your segments as you can have stations in general. They do not affect the baseband cable length. The DELNI eats about 5-10m off the maximum transciever cable length for things that are plugged into it (except for other DELNI's). DEC doesn't mention cascaded DELNI's connected to a baseband cable, but it does work.
