[comp.sys.proteon] Delays in v8.0

RUBIN@GRAF.POLY.EDU (David Rubin) (01/24/89)

Thanks to those who responded about my Telnet delays in v8.0.

The responses I received agree that the problem is most likely ARP
cache table timeouts, which is something I suspected. In 7.3a, I
believe the table entries did not time out.

However, why should the gateway have to wait for an ARP reply to
resolve a host on our on local net? All hosts on our 3 ethernets
are subnetted on net 128.238... If the gateway sees a packet destined
for 128.238.x.x, shouldn't it just look at the subnet bits and place
the packet on the appropriate ethernet? Is there a way (other than
static routes) that I can ensure that this happens?
