[comp.sys.proteon] DI article published today

) (04/14/89)

My forum piece was published today in the Daily Illini. It doesn't seem
to be changed much from my original. I've put the original troff/-me
source in the anon-FTP area on uxc in /pub/forum-gun.me .

As you can see from the header, I'm now a dad. Great feeling, much more
than I could ever express in words. I'll be working from home a bit more
for the next few weeks.

I'd like to move this list into the /usr/lib/aliases file and give it a name
and a name-request alias. "firearms" is already used so I've come up with
cmi-guns and cmi-guns-request. It will be a reflector with archives collected
in /pub/cmi-guns.archive for anon-FTP from uxc.

If anyone on the list doesn't have access to the info-firearms and
info-firearms-politics notesfiles, you can be added to the local alias
and receive either as mail messages.

And now for the political part of this message.

It's important to get through to your government representatives at all
levels that you take firearms issues seriously. They need to know that
voters are watching their behavior. If you believe that the current anti-AR
efforts are seriously mis-directed, write letters to them and explain why.
The more rational letters they receive, the more they'll worry about revenge
in the next election.

I use a large legal pad and write my letters in longhand. A one page letter
usually takes ten minutes and can be done during commercial breaks.

Biased reporting needs attention as well. On April 5th, WCIA local news
ran a story about Bush's decision to restrict imports of additional AR brands.
During a film clip they showed a full-auto AK-47 firing long bursts.
This is bound to confuse more than a few people as to what a semi-auto is.
My letter to the News Editor, David Shaul, has had no response as yet.
In another week I'll try putting that into a letter to the N-G.
