[comp.sys.proteon] Our P4200 problems.

JMWOBUS@SUVM.BITNET ("John M. Wobus") (06/15/89)

This is a followup to my previous message about P4200s having trouble
picking up routing updates that are being broadcast on an Ethernet.
Additional help from Proteon helped us discover that the problem was
probably lack of memory: the gateways in question had several interfaces
& ran DECNet and had only 1/2 meg: commands to display the buffer-pool
count revealed a shockingly small number. Our upgrade to the newer
processor also gave us an additional 1/2 meg which may have helped us
as much as the additional processor speed. This additional know-how has
induced us to adjust the buffer-size down to the minimal size that we
really need and will certainly help us plan future upgrades more
rationally.

Thus much of our problem was our own ignorance, though it would behoove
Proteon to diagnose such problems more efficiently, perhaps even before
a customer installs a gateway in such a configuration.
