[comp.sys.proteon] Large Packets over serial lines

rfd@PICA.ARMY.MIL ("Robert F. Donnelly", IMD-WAB) (02/15/91)

	I've got a serial line (224 Kbit/sec aka 4 DS0) running between
two P4200 routers (8.2 firmware). One of our customers is trying to run
NFS/SYBASE applications that are running packet sizes in excess of 512
bytes. He's getting terrible response. I can verify the results by
running 'ping' with a packet size of 992 (transmitted packet size is
1000 bytes). Average loss is 40-50%. The average loss on 64 byte ping
runs is less than 3%.

Question: I would have thought the problem was that the IP forwarder was
doing packet fragmentation, but I'm logging all the events that would
point to packet fragmentation or packets being discarded. What should I
be looking for ??
