[net.news.group] confusion

rwhw@5941ux.UUCP (06/22/83)

I suggest that each Newsgroup have a definition appended to it so that
a person is informed about the Subjects possible contents.

net.rec.disc for example;
net for all
rec ???? record/recreation/recording/receiving ????
disc ???? platter/storage medium/dance/discography ????

very confusing to say the least.

I think net.rec.disc is for recreation-Frisbee, but I could be wrong.

To clear up some confusion about net.rec and net.sport: net.sport
is for spectator sports (e.g. baseball, hocket, football, etc.)
net.rec is for recreational/participant sports/activities (bird
watching, bridge, caving, etc.)

Hi disc fans,

This is your local disc (frisbee) nut. The reason I decided to use

				`net.rec.disc`

as the name for the new frisbee related newsgroup was:

1) Frisbee is a registered trademark of Wham-o, and I wasn't sure we were
allowed to use such a thing on the net.

2) To the Ultimate (team disc (frisbee) sport) world, frisbee is just one
type of disc manufactured by Wham-o. There is the Ultra-Star and Sky-
Styler made by Discraft Inc. for example.

3) Using 'net.rec.ultimate' was limiting the newsgroup (some people though)
to just the sport of Ultimate, which by the way is the most exciting
sport you can play with a disc (frisbee) in my opinion!

4) As long as the description next to the newsgroup states what the newsgroup
is about, I see no problem with it. For example:

net.rec.disc - Disc (frisbee) related sports. Ultimate, freestyle, etc.

Although if more people like 'net.rec.frisbee' I am more than willing
to go along with it. One thing Ultimate has talk me is to get along with
people and be mellow! Ultimate and pot that is. Ha! Ha!

I'm really excited about this newsgroup and plan to make it very productive
for all disc fans out there in net land. If the god of 'net.news.group' is out
there, can he please contact me and discribe the correct procedure for making
this newsgroup a reality!

Thanks for all the help disc fans!

When a ball dreams, it dreams of being a disc!

PS. By the way if anyone wants the 8th Edition Rules to Ultimate or one
of my Ultimate teams lists, just send me your postal address. Later!
