Hello, We have a bunch of p4200s on an FDDI ring. I was wondering if we'd have any problems adding Cisco AGS+s with FDDI interfaces to this ring. Is anyone using Ciscos and Proteons on the same FDDI network? If so, did you encounter any problems initially. Have there been any ongoing problems related to incompatibility between the two? Jay - I have used our 4200 routers at the interoperablility tests at UNH, ANTC, and Interop. We connect, pass data, and live with each other real well. I know these tests were not the real world, but take this info for what it is worth. Mike Wilson

Chandra - At the Interop hot staging in September, and later (just to be sure) that month, cisco, Wellfleet, and we (Proteon) tried out CMIS/CMIP (ISO) connectivity on FDDI. That protocol does NOT use the SNAP encapsulation. I don't think we tried XNS, IPX, DECNET, Apollo Domain; we know that Appletalk had a slight Phase I/II problem - only recently have there been interoperability proposals for distinguishing between I and II. So no, except for ISO and IP (we and Wellfleet tried DECNET also), these interoperability tests have not tried the higher layers. Mike Wilson

At least two and I think all 3 of these organizations do not claim to test anything but the link layer and below. They have varied SMT and PCM test suites and procedures, but at least one of the three will just look blank if you talk about IP; they disavow any knowledge of TCP/IP or any other useful protocol. ("Useful" as in the reason someone might buy the stuff.) Interop itself relies on the other two and on the vendors themselves to test things. At least this was my experience last year and the year before, and it seems the same so far this year. There was X over TCP/IP/FDDI at Interop90, but there was no more testing than workstation vendors yelling to each other, "Hey, do you want to try it now?" Fortunately, TCP/IP works fine, provide the lower layers even half work. Vernon Schryver, vjs@sgi.com
