[comp.sys.xerox] need help with display on 1108

hakanson@mist.cs.orst.edu (Marion Hakanson) (01/21/88)

One of our "old-style" 1108 displays recently went way out of whack,
with the top 1/4 of the screen appearing squished down and folded over
the next lower portion of the screen. No amount of adjustment of the
various pots, etc. inside improved anything (the Horiz. Osc. adjustment
made the same kind of anomaly in a horizontal direction if it was put
out of sorts).

The Xerox (BSG) repair people have said this is not an unusual
failure, and that they only replace complete displays (at a mere
$1805.65), rather than actually repair them. Of course, the machine
is not on any type of hardware maintenance contract, and is nearing
the end of its useful life here, anyway, so we can't afford to spend
major money on it. If I could track down a schematic, we'd have a
chance of letting a technician here play with the thing, but I've had
no luck so far in finding one.

If you've got a spare monitor lying around (hah!) we might be willing
to take it off your hands at a reasonable price. Otherwise, we'll just
have to part out the old monitor and it's CPU to keep our other three
machines running a little while longer.

So, I'm open to suggestions from others who may have been through
this, either for repairing the old monitor, finding a reasonably
priced replacement, a schematic, or whatever.

Thanks....

If by "old-style 1108 display" you mean the boxy 17" screen that sits on a large
pedestal and has a slider pot for a brightness control (as opposed to the more
streamlined 17" display with curved sides that came with the Carnation
low-profile keyboard), then I can provide only a glimmer of a clue. This is an
HD-17 CRT, made by Ball Brothers, Ball Electronic Display Division. I have the
name of an engineer, Al Wielenberg, and a phone number, 612/786-8900, which
didn't work the last time I tried calling them. I *think* they went out of
business. I have been unable to find a schematic for these monitors myself,
even right here within Xerox. Sigh.
