[comp.sys.xerox] Medley release

welch@TUT.CIS.OHIO-STATE.EDU (Arun Welch) (10/19/88)

I got a call today from our local analyst, who said that Medley
started shipping to US customers via UPS on friday (the 14th). So,
expect yours shortly. I have no idea when you folks on the other side
of the Atlantic will get it, hopefully it won't be too far behind.
Things I've liked about it:
The new lisplibrary module called TextModules. If you do any portable
CL stuff, this is great.
Rooms. I'm still don't think it's absolutely essential, but it sure is
handy to have around.
The various bugfixes. Always a plus....

Things I hate:
TCPChat seems to have gotten *slow*. I dunno why, and Isubmitted a bug
report on it. Maybe it got fixed in the release.

Could you please tell us more about TextModules! (It will probably be some
time before Medley reaches Sweden.) Yes, I *would* like to write portable
CL code!

Description of TEXTMODULES as described in the Lisp Library Modules Manual
p. 305:
>>>>
TEXTMODULES converts source code files from File Manager format into Common
Lisp style plain text and back again. When exporting to plain text, a small
number of File Manager coms types are supported. When importing from a
plain text file, several convinience features are available, including
comment upgrade and conversion of specific named defmacros into
defdefiners.
...
The Text File Translator supports the development of portable Common Lisp
source code in the Lisp Environment. It brings portable Common Lisp sources
into the File Manager without losing its contents. It also makes new text
files based on the File Manager's "filecoms".
