I received some mail today (in response to my recent posting of the newsgroup list) that said that there was a discussion some time ago that led to the concession of creaming net.mc and net.motorcycle and making net.cycle serve BOTH motorcycles and bicycles. It seems silly to have two separate groups for these two things, what with sporadic activity and all. Therefore, let me propose that net.cycle indeed serve both interests.

From alice!alb I received some mail today (in response to my recent posting of the newsgroup list) that said that there was a discussion some time ago that led to the concession of creaming net.mc and net.motorcycle and making net.cycle serve BOTH motorcycles and bicycles. It seems silly to have two separate groups for these two things, what with sporadic activity and all. Therefore, let me propose that net.cycle indeed serve both interests. It is silly to combine two subjects just because they share a common substring! Why not combine discussion about automobiles and automation in net.auto? The group net.sw could be used for discussing both software and Star Wars. Net.sf-lovers can be used for those who left their heart in San Francisco or for science fiction buffs. I am a bicyclist and don't really care *anything* about what a leather-clad Harley rider has to say. When I first started reading the news, I saw an article about motorcycles in net.cycle, and immediately unsubscribed. Combining these two groups will only stifle the discussions of each, while the subject of separate groups will be brought up later on a recurring basis. Ken Turkowski {decwrl,amd70}!turtlevax!ken

In response to the proposal to combine the newsgroups for bicycle and motorcycle: YECCCHHH! I don't really want to read about motorcycles. Maybe if in the future I consider getting one, I might change my mind, but right now, all I care about are the PPV's (people-powered-vehicles). What with all the colleges that are on the UNIX-net, I'm sure there is more than enough interest to support a bike-list, since we college students are notorious for realizing what the most positive (in a total, cosmic sense) form of transportation is. #R:alice:-192800:ima:18100006:000:872 ima!stevel Jun 27 11:22:00 1983 I had the same experience as Ken. I am interested in bicycles but.... I DO NOT WANT TO READ ABOUT MORTORCYCLES!!!!!!!!!! They do not share anything but the fact that they both use two wheels. So lets get a seperate group for bicycles. There certainly is enough positive response. This will probably be a seasonal subject for a lot of the world as it gets cold up here but there does seem to be alot of interest. The seperation of topics into different newsgroups should be done when the reading population is different. The seperation allows the reader to select what he wants to read. This allows one to look at more of what they are interested in. Not what happens to be lumped togeather. This will promote participation in the net.
