[comp.sys.xerox] RPC Sun-XEROX

welch@CIS.OHIO-STATE.EDU (Arun Welch) (03/09/89)

I dunno if this will do you any good, being on the other side of the
pond, but the folks at Sumex wrote an RPC for the dlions, I know it's
available for Medley in our ftp lispusers area. What does it take to
get stuff like this to you?

Hi folks,
for some special purposes I need a remote procedure call
facility (in fact: a LISP-to-LISP or LISP-to-PROLOG connection) between a
dmachine running InterLISP/KOTO and a Sun running SunOS 3.5
(BSD 4.2). Does anyone have such a facility? If not, does
anyone have the source for rpc - maybe on the Sun side or
the XEROX side which could be reimplemented and upgraded to
a two-way-connection?
Michael

Another alternative would be to use Xerox's Courier RPC which has been
built-in to Xerox Lisp/Envos Medley for many releases. I believe our Sun came
with a unix implementation of Courier, but if you don't have it, you can FTP
it from the xns subdirectory of the anonymous FTP area on Arisia.Xerox.com. I
think you can also order a tape from the Xerox Systems Institute. I don't
know what it costs. Their telephone number in the US is (408) 737-4652.

Christopher Lane (the author of the Courierserve lispusers package)
points out to me that the XNS layers distributed by Sun don't go up to the
layer of Courier. Hence you would need the additional software from Arisia or
the Xerox Systems Institute that I alluded to. I don't know if that
additional software permits user implementation of Courier servers on the unix
host or just Courier clients, BTW. I've never used it.

The Courier RPC package from the people at Cornell works well on Suns and
Vaxen (having written a few applications myself). It produces C stubs so
you may have troubles with your Lisp or Prolog applications.

Another glich is the XNS protocol support. This is standard in the 4.3
kernel and 4.2 with Maryland XNS for Vaxen. The Sun OS package with XNS
support is available from Sun as a Sun Consulting Product and costs $$$.

I have not heard of Courier supported by lower level protocols other than
spp on top of xns.
