This idea was suggested by Gene Spafford's
(spaf@gatech) recent request that people put Ga. Tech on
their mailing lists for technical reports, and by lists of
reports I've seen in ACM SIG-publications (and other jour-
nals) which come out many months late. How about a group
where organizations could post lists of new reports (or old
ones) that are available, along with addresses and ordering
instructions? (Would advertising reports for which there is
a charge constitute commercial use of the net? I don't
know.)
This already happens, to a limited extent, in special-
interest newsgroups. The alternative would be to post a
longer list of reports to one newsgroup and to let other
articles refer to that list. It also would give us a chance
to argue over what format the lists should be presented in.
The only problem I can forsee is that too many people may
write asking for free reports.

net.research is an existing, COMPLETELY unused group which would be appropriate for that. Matter of fact, I think that was one of its proposed uses when it was created. Its dot file is all of 6 chars long here, untouched since March. -Jay Lepreau
