     This   idea   was   suggested   by   Gene    Spafford's
(spaf@gatech)  recent  request  that  people put Ga. Tech on
their mailing lists for technical reports, and by  lists  of
reports  I've  seen in ACM SIG-publications (and other jour-
nals) which come out many months late.  How  about  a  group
where  organizations could post lists of new reports (or old
ones) that are available, along with addresses and  ordering
instructions?  (Would advertising reports for which there is
a charge constitute commercial use  of  the  net?   I  don't
know.)
     This already happens, to a limited extent, in  special-
interest  newsgroups.   The  alternative  would be to post a
longer list of reports to one newsgroup  and  to  let  other
articles refer to that list.  It also would give us a chance
to argue over what format the lists should be presented  in.
The  only  problem I can forsee is that too many people  may
write asking for free reports.

net.research is an existing, COMPLETELY unused group which would be appropriate for that. Matter of fact, I think that was one of its proposed uses when it was created. Its dot file is all of 6 chars long here, untouched since March. -Jay Lepreau
