[comp.sys.xerox] Xerox Lisp on Suns - summary

cipin@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca (Lubo Cipin) (12/20/89)

Many thanks to the dozen+ responses I received to my request for experiences
with Xerox Lisp on Suns. They were very helpful.

They basically all concurred that:

  - The compatibility between Medley on Xerox 1108s or 1186s and SUNs was
excellent, due to the fact that the emulator emulates at the byte
level. The sysouts are perfectly compatible.

(Only one compatibility problem was mentioned, which involved some
    really ancient code).

  - Sparcstations are the way to go, if you can afford them. (They do seem
to give you a lot of preformance/value for your money.) With sufficient
memory they will run faster than 1186s. Even Sun/3s will be fairly efficeint
given enough memory. Everybody recommended 8 MB of memory, or better.
Arun Welch <welch@cis.ohio-state.edu> seems to have captured everybody's
    opinion by writing that
4M is really too little, 8M works fine, 16M is wonderful,
      32M is decadent.

   - Xerox fonts posed no problem: Medley supports all fonts/character sets
of Lyric , and their use is transparent: it's really like runnning a
     1108/1186 box.
